Poverty and parks

It’s summer vacation time, when families hit the road and see some of the nation’s most treasured places — national parks. While stimulus funds help keep the parks ready for visitors, many who live near these well-preserved areas are facing hard times.

In Flagstaff, Arizona, near the Grand Canyon, nearly one in three people need government assistance each month, NPR station KNAU reports. Many residents come to Flagstaff from the surrounding Navajo reservations because the city has better resources, but it’s hard to stay.

““We have single parents working two jobs…sometimes these families are just one paycheck away from being homeless.”

Listen to “Poverty With a View”

In Montana, Yellowstone Public Radio’s series on economic hardship in the region last year examined homelessness and job loss in the Yellowstone National Park area. Their reports also addressed “big Sky Grants” given to laid-off local residents and a bill that protects the residents of mobile home parks.

At the same time, federal funds are being freed up to keep park rangers employed so the parks run smoothly all summer long.

WNYC and PRI’s The Takeaway reports on a project that will put a new roof on the visitors’ center at the Dinosaur National Monument in Utah.

Do you plan to visit a National Park this summer? How are the parks in your area weathering the economic climate? Share your national parks stories here.

Making the mortgage crisis personal

The mortgage crisis has forced people to be creative in moving on with their lives after losing a home. A new blog from PRX, EconomyBeat, found two bloggers who are upbeat, despite tough times.

In Michigan, where the auto industry layoffs have been forcing more and more foreclosures, Michigan Public Radio spoke with people who are having trouble picking up the pieces as the recession doesn’t seem to be letting up in the Midwest.

And in St. Louis, KETC hosted a town hall this week discussing the impact of the mortgage crisis from political, financial and personal angles. Participants and viewers were also able to contact advisers directly for more advice after the broadcast.

Hurricane economics

Four years ago, Hurricane Katrina slammed into New Orleans and threw the economy of the Gulf Coast into a tailspin. While national coverage has largely moved on, local broadcasters in these areas are still grappling with the storm’s lingering effects.

Radio news program Mississippi Edition at Mississippi Public Broadcasting in Jackson spoke with former Mississippi Governor William Winter and Richard Nathan of the Nelson A Rockefeller Institute of Government about how recovery is faring four years on.

Back in March, MPB spoke with Simmons about his life has changed since the move.

There are several investigative projects that are looking at the Katrina recovery in various fields. ProPublica recently partnered with the New York Times to take a deeper look at health care after Hurricane Katrina. The Greater New Orleans Data Center is analyzing how New Orleans is faring in the national recession, by tracking neighborhood recovery indicators, and making local, state and federal policy recommendations. This piece from WWNO in New Orleans further reports on the GNODC’s work.

For more on the Hurricane Katrina anniversary, PRX has a playlist featuring stories ranging from how pets are faring since Katrina to the state of levees four years after they were destroyed.

Tonight on Tavis Smiley, historian Douglas Brinkley talks about his hometown and the recovery efforts in the context of other disasters in American history.
